Health & Safety

Last updated: January 2026

Your Safety

The safety of our guests is a priority. Stonefly Lodge is located in a remote wilderness setting, and while we take every precaution, guests should be aware of the inherent risks of outdoor activities and rural environments.

Activity Risks

Many activities available through or arranged by Stonefly Lodge involve inherent risks, including but not limited to:

  • Fly fishing (wading in rivers, uneven terrain, weather exposure)

  • Helicopter flights (aviation risks, weather-dependent operations)

  • Hiking and bush walks (uneven ground, wildlife, weather changes)

  • Boating and kayaking (water-based risks)

Weather

New Zealand weather can change rapidly. Outdoor activities, particularly helicopter flights and fishing excursions, may be postponed or cancelled due to weather conditions. Safety is always the priority, and our guides and operators will make the final call on whether conditions are suitable.

Fitness & Mobility

Guests participate in all activities at their own risk. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers adventure activities.

Some activities require a reasonable level of fitness. Please let us know of any mobility concerns or health conditions when booking so we can advise on suitable options and make appropriate arrangements.

Accessibility

Stonefly Lodge is a multi-level building in a rural setting. While we strive to accommodate all guests, the lodge is not fully wheelchair accessible. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs before booking.

Emergencies

The lodge is located approximately 50 minutes from Nelson. In the event of a medical emergency, our staff are trained in first aid and will coordinate with emergency services. The nearest hospital is Nelson Hospital.

Guest Responsibilities

Guests are expected to:

  • Follow safety instructions from lodge staff, guides, and activity operators

  • Disclose relevant health conditions or concerns

  • Use appropriate footwear and clothing for activities

  • Supervise children at all times

  • Consume alcohol responsibly

Right to Refuse

Stonefly Lodge and our activity partners reserve the right to refuse participation in any activity if a guest is deemed unfit, intoxicated, or behaving in a manner that may endanger themselves or others. No refund will be provided in such cases.

Environment

Stonefly Lodge operates an eco-friendly Biolytix wastewater system that uses living organisms to process waste. Guests must not put chemicals, harsh cleaning products, or non-biodegradable items down any drains. This protects our system and the surrounding environment.
