SUSTAINABILITY

Built with the Land in Mind

Since 2009, Stonefly Lodge has operated entirely off-grid; powered by the sun, fed by the garden, and designed to leave the lightest footprint possible.

ENERGY

Powered by the Sun

34 high-capacity solar panels and recently upgraded battery banks provide all the electricity for the lodge and its amenities. From heating to lighting to your morning coffee — every watt comes from the sun.

Central heating is provided by a log burner circulating hot water through the concrete floors. Heat pumps in every room provide both heating and cooling.

WATER

Fresh from the Spring

Water at Stonefly comes from our beautiful fresh spring and is treated with a multi-stage UV filtration system. It's regularly tested and pure enough to drink straight from the tap.

Our wastewater is treated on-site by the multi-award-winning Biolytix system; a living ecosystem of worms, beetles, and microorganisms that process waste naturally.

CONSTRUCTION

Timber. Stone. By Hand.

Timeber and stone interior of Stonefly Lodge

The lodge was built from plantation timber milled right here on the property. The extensive stonework throughout — fireplaces, pillars, walls — was hand-collected from the river below by the original owner.

New Zealand wool insulates all walls, 50% thicken than standard. Double-glazed low-E windows and a purpose-built sunroom capture winter sun, releasing heat slowly through the evening.

Growing Toward Self-Sufficiency

FARM & GARDEN

Our permaculture garden follows the "no-dig" philosophy — preserving soil structure and nurturing the fungal networks vital to plant health. We grow most of our fruit and vegetables on-site.

22 manuka beehives produce medicinal honey while pollinating our crops. Free-range chickens from “Horatio’s Hen House” provide fresh eggs, and our lodge ducks handle pest control naturally.
